Why Personal Training leads to better Fitness results
In the realm of fitness and health, numerous training methods are available, including solo workouts, group classes, and personal training. But which approach yields the most significant results for adults? A recent study published in Heliyon (2024) sheds new light on this question by comparing the effects of three training modalities: individual training, partner training, and training under the guidance of a personal trainer.
Three groups, twelve weeks, measurable outcomes
In this controlled experiment, 66 healthy adults were divided into three training groups. Over 12 weeks, participants trained three times per week, with assessments of fat and muscle mass, strength (1RM bench press and squat), adherence to dietary advice, and injury frequency. The group guided by a personal trainer exhibited the most impressive results. This group lost an average of 1.61 kg of fat mass (p = 0.033), a statistically significant reduction not observed in the other groups. Additionally, squat strength increased the most in this group (p = 0.003).
Benefits of Personal Training: Beyond physical gains
Beyond physical improvements such as increased strength and fat loss, the results also highlighted behavioral advantages. The personal trainer group adhered more consistently to the dietary plan (p < 0.001) and experienced significantly fewer injuries. This suggests a crucial psychological benefit: enhanced motivation, better guidance, and increased adherence to healthy habits.
Practical implications for Fitness Professionals
For lifestyle coaches and personal trainers, this research underscores the added value of individualized guidance. Personal training not only proves more effective physically but also promotes behavioral change and injury prevention. In the context of lifestyle interventions, incorporating personal training serves as a powerful tool for sustainable health improvements.
