EHFA Board and Platinum Partners meet the European Commission
EHFA changed its location to Brussels in December 2007 which means that the Association is closer to the centre of power and is in a better position to influence decision making process at European level.
A first result was already reached last week, when EHFA Platinum Partners and Board Members met up with Mr Michal Krejza, Head of the Sport Unit of the Directorate-General for Education and Culture of the European Commission and with Mr Pedro Velazquez, Deputy Head of Sport to discuss any potential opportunities for the fitness industry as a result of the EU Sport White Paper.
EHFA’s President Harm Tegelaars is very pleased with the results of the meeting, which announce a closer collaboration between both parties: ‘With regard to the Physical Activities Guidelines and the amount of physical activity that should be recommended by the Member States for example, the EHFA will be bilaterally consulted to gather as much information from the industry as possible. The European Commission will also be happy to receive any further proposals under the European Qualifications Framework (EQF)/European Credit Transfers in Vocational Education Training (ECVET) streams from EHFA.’
Other collaboration forms include the determining of the information needed by the industry and gathered by the next round of Sport Specific Surveys in 2009, a formal invitation to the EU Sports Stakeholder Forum together with the Sports Ministers from all European Member States, and a partnership in thematic discussions on specific issues.
Mr Tegelaars concluded: ‘It was excellent to see that the Commission already has a strong working knowledge of the health and fitness sector. I hope that the relationship between the sector and the Commission can go from strength to strength now that the industry is properly represented in Brussels.’
