EHFA & EU Platform For Action On Diet, Physical Activity And Health
As mentioned in previous “EHFA Updates”, EHFA has been an active member of the EU Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health since 2006. The Directorate General for Health & Consumers (DG Sanco) of the European Commission officially launched the EU Platform in March 2005. The purpose of the Platform is to provide an example of an action-oriented cooperative process to help reverse the trend towards obesity. The Platform is also one of the main tools of the Strategy for Europe on Nutrition, Overweight and Obesity-related health issues as adopted in 2007. It is composed of European-level umbrella organisations, ranging from the food industry, health and sports organisations to civil society NGOs covering a wide range of issues on nutrition and physical activity issues as well as health-related matters. Platform members commit to concrete actions on tackling current trends in diet and physical activity to fight against obesity and overweight related problems.
During the last meeting of the EU Platform, which took place in Brussels on 6 October, EHFA presented ''Our Greatest Team” campaign inviting members of the public to make a pledge to improve health and wellbeing by taking advantage of the 2012 London Olympic Games. The presentation was delivered by Technogym who believe that the London Olympics will represent a unique opportunity for UK to promote the wellness lifestyle and attract more people to regular physical activity.
EHFA welcomes this initiative, which should be used as an example for other European countries in support of our mantra to get ‘More People, More Active, More Often’.
